CityTV Seasons Greetings Debate
December 27, 2007
Recently CityTV held a debate on what sort of greeting should be used at christmas.
Many people stated they felt that changing your greeting dependent on someone’s religion was intemperate political correctness. While in practice I agree that political correctness can be annoying at times;however, in theory it is necessary for our society to prosper, and one of the great achievements of western culture.
Although I cannot find any proper articles nor websites to cite, I understand in psychology, preconceived notations are a powerful influence on first impressions. Any socially acceptable preconceived notation, generalization or stereotype will ultimately effect someone’s life – a action no-one has the right to do.
The ideas of apolitical-correctness [sic] spread quickly through the mechanisms of meme and emergent social structure. All ideas evolve and grow, and immoral ideas like racism, prejudice, and social generalization are no exception.
Is it, a great burden on you not to call blacks niggers nor stone gays? No, these actions are part of how we live now, and require no more thought than walking down the street. We must restructure our language, society, culture, and selves until political correctness isn’t a path we must strive fore; rather, it is our lifestyle.
When I can look at someone else and truely not know them, I will be free to make the best choices about people and how I interact with them.
